What I Do

Scant knowledge on this four-piece band.  Formed we think by two old school chums- Steve Jack on vocals & Graham McKinley on guitar around summer 1985.  The former there is little known of any previous bands but the latter counted The Primevals & Silent Command in his CV.  The band was complimented by Donald ? on Bass with Alan Fleming joining when Graham approached him with an offer he could not refuse.

The band attempted an advertising coup by plastering the name everywhere they could in order that the public would be wondering who Russell was and so follow the band in their thousands.  This never happened of course but a few quality gigs were secured over their short career supporting such acts as Hipsway & The Shop assistants.

Where’s Russell were together for around 6 months and recorded two demos.  The first was at Sirocco Studios in Kilmarnock.  The second was at the prestigious (and expensive) Cava. With the second recording it was hoped to release as a single but before this could happen the vocalist jumped ship to Kettering Town (the area not the football team!!) & the band disbanded immediately after.  The single remained unreleased mainly due to an inability to contact the songwriters for permission.

So if any former members are out there please contact us in order that we can update this short biography.  Especially Donald in order that your full name can be included!!!  Who knows we may even still release the songs on CD?

“I'm Tom Rafferty. I founded the Primevals with Mickey Rooney, a long long time ago, in Glasgow.
I've known Graham McKinley since we were 9 - I was at school with him, played in bands with him, including Max Headroom & The Car Parks. I did borrow Graham's 1972 Telecaster Deluxe for the first couple of Primevals gigs, because I didn't own a decent guitar at that point. That was a big help.
I also rented a room for about 6 months in Steve Jack's flat in 83, when the Primevals were starting up, and Steve was a great help to me and us back then.

But Graham was never in the Primevals

So did Graham say he was in the Primevals ? His guitar definitely did our first two gigs, but I was playing it.”

We have just managed to secure the sound of Where's Russell thanks to some dodgy old cassette tapes from the Hellfire Basement & some dinky mastering work from the magnificent Colin at La Chunky. So here are some snippets for your listening pleasure:
