Having won over a 3000 strong rioting crowd when they played the notorious Baby Shambles Astoria gig in 2004 , The Skuzzies then mysteriously slipped away. Homelessness, squat life and hard times forced the band to take 2 year hiatus until founding members , singer/guitarist Crooked J and bassist Julian Richards reunited in 2006.
Longstanding musical comrades, Crooked J (27) and Julian (26) who both hail from South East London , had previously played in Automata. Whilst Automata had enjoyed a cult following , and were able to count in their ranks of supporters Trent Reznor, Alan McGee and Pete Doherty, the band were too left field to garner mainstream acceptance. Automata were however the stepping-stone that led to The Skuzzies whose gritty songs of street life and experience are both universal and unique.
In December 2006 they recruited drummer Nick Le West (25) another former Automata luminary whose Travis Bickle haircut is a statement of intent when it comes to his powerhouse drumming. The final recruit was Argentinean guitarist Federico Zig (26) whose willowy exoticism makes him a fine foil to Crooked J's rock n' roll ruffian. Of The Skuzzies Zig says they "Reflect my own raw and obscure nightmares"Scarred by the past and fighting for a future.
The Skuzzies visceral excitement, compulsive hooks and punchy tunes make them a truly unique proposition. Strokes producer Gordon Raphael , who worked with The Skuzzies on their demo , described them "As the best band in London in the last 5 years." Also Johnny Thunder's friend and biographer, Nina Antonia, manages The Skuzzies.
Garnering press interest and an ever growing fan base , The Skuzzies really are a must see outfit before they go mega!! Framingo are just mega exited about these 4-piece wonders & just cannot wait to get their sound out to you, the music loving public!!
